I had not had any twins in MONTHS when these boys' mama contacted me! I was very excited to finally have some twinkies in front of my camera again! The session was quite long, as one was awake while the other slept....but the images turned out to be among my favorites ever!

Something different (Kansas City Portrait Photographer)

So I woke up from a dream last night (strangely my dream was about tuna fish which I can't explain but did have for lunch today bc of that dream) and while I was falling back to sleep I had an idea!

Here's what I want to do.....most of you remember when I did Portrait Parties several years ago...I met a lot of you that way. I want to bring BACK the party.....but instead of me taking your kids pictures, I'm going to teach YOU to do it.

Lets face it, most families have a nice DSLR or two now.....and although it does just fine on auto, that camera can do more! And I wan to show you what it can do!

So what this will entail is :

A hostess (or host, I'm not trying to be sexist here) to have the party at their home. Provide the guests and the snacks/drinks.
A 2 hour time slot (can be weekend or weekday or evening).
Each guest needs to bring a DSLR (or a film SLR if anyone besides me still owns one), lenses and a notebook for note taking!

What I will teach you:

What all those settings do
Iso/shutter speed/aperture
Depth of field: what it is and how to exploit it
Metering natural light
How to find good light
Creativity in your pictures

The cost for this intensive 2 hour course is $100 per person. The minimum party is 5 attendees and the maximum is 10. The host/ess does not pay the course fee.

Womens Only Self Defense Seminar....please come!

I am taking Krav Maga which is an Israeli martial arts course. We are not only doing great conditioning but every class contains valuable self defense drills. I feel fantastic, empowered and strong!! I cant stress enough how amazing it feels to take down an "attacker" twice my size with just a few well-placed punches, kicks and twists!

This Saturday, March 19 from 1030-1230 pm, my instructor in Krav Maga is holding a Womens Self Defense seminar. He will be demonstrating tactics, combatives, drills and strategies for dealing with all types of issues : Harassment, Abuse, Rape Prevention, bullying and male intimidation! It will be fact-driven (serious but not a downer...we all know most men are amazing...we have great husbands, boyfriends, brothers and bosses!!), action-packed (wear comfy clothes, you will be training!) and you will leave EMPOWERED!

Imagine walking to your car from the grocery store and some guy 2x your size grabs you by the ponytail and starts to pull you into his van...do you know what you would do? I didnt...we ran that drill and I immediately panicked! I thought I was cool under pressure, but I folded! Didnt scream, didnt set my body weight, didnt do ANYTHING! Had that been an actual attack, I would have been taken. Luckily my instructor taught me the defense and we ran it again....until its muscle memory....until I dont have to "know" what to do...,my body just does it!!

You dont have to be super-fit (heck Im certainly not!), super strong or super-agressive. We all know bullies pick on people smaller than they are....dont be that person!

Learn to protect yourself AND your children! Teach your kids that Mom is strong and confident!

Parents Night Out....

The martial arts studio where my kids and I train is launching a Parents Night Out and the owner has asked me to be a part of it! Its a fun thing for me bc a) I love kids obviously and b) I really love the programs that his place offers! So when I was asked to help get the PNO program off the ground, I was excited!!

Our big debut is this Friday night from 630-1030. Its 20 bucks per kid, we will be eating pizza, doing karate, playing games, crafts, hnaging out. You can sign up online at www.kcpma.com under the "Event Registration" page.

I will be there with your kids the whole time, Eric Siley, the owner and chief instructor, will be there the whole time (he will be doing the instructing of course) and it will be fun! My kids will be there and I hope lots of their friends!!

My life right now (Kansas CIty Photographer)

So I haven't blogged in ages.....some of you know why and some of you just think im lazy lol.

Truth is, things didn't turn out exactly like I wanted.....I thought the big studio and the events and the trappings would be what I really wanted to do with my life/career....turns out I was wrong.

I loved that studio space.....the light, the room, the furniture, the smell of fresh bread from next door....but as I worked and worked to pay the rent, I started to fall apart! Late returning calls and emails, missed orders, no time for birthday cards like I used to send my clients. The more trappings I acquired, the more I lost sight of why I became a photographer.....to build relationships with my clients....treat them as friends....have them know they are valued.

So last fall I decided to scale things back....do less and give my loyal clients more. So this week I closed up the studio space and packed away some of those trappings....I'm going backwards, but in a good way...I'm going back to what I loved about my photography....the simple smile of a toddler at play, the joy of a family having their first family session in years and making a shy high school senior feel like a super model!

I am also going to blog more....not just about my business....but about my life! I want to share in your lives and I want you all to share in mine....so I want to share some stuff I'm doing now for ME, too!

I am still running...I have a 5k this Saturday, running a 10k at rock the parkway in April....the trolley run for team Carly Jade, and of course hospital hill! I am also training in 2 new fields: Krav Maga which is a hand to hand combat training program, and Cage Fitness which is a Mixed Martial Arts inspired workout. It's all amazing and I feel the best I have in years! Not to mention I'm getting quite fit for the upcoming swimsuit season!! My kids are busy, spring sports wil be starting up and we will be on the go as usual. Both my boys are also still in karate and doing great with it! Keeps them out of trouble!

I am looking forward to this new fresh spring weather and my new fresh look....new website and stuff will be launched very soon too! Its a great life and I'm grateful for it every day!!

I love families....I love how they laugh and tease each other with ease....I love how excited they are (ok, the Moms) about getting family portraits done....and I love how they dont complain (out loud anyway) about tromping through the woods so I can capture them in a patch of light no bigger than my dog.

This family was terrific, and we had the best lighting....I love my backyard..... ;)

I love Family Portrait time for my friends.....Dena is a fabulous photographer in North Central Kansas and since I pressured her into doing MY annual family session this year, she "twisted my arm" to do hers....Ok, no one pressured and no one twisted....we actually just like each others work and traded, LOL

Since we live 4 hours apart, we decided we would meet in the middle...so sprained ankle and all, I gathered my family and we trekked to Manhattan this past weekend! D knew this cool area and we had the best light!

Of course *I* think most of the light came from all the subjects beauty and handsomeness..and I *am* the professional, so I am right.

After a slew of beautiful newborns, it was a real treat over the summer to get to meet Miss C....finally, someone to play with, LOL

Miss C, being a discriminating 4 year old and all, was the perfect playmate for me....we picked flowers, we played with stuffed animals, and we had a tea party. All in all it was a wonderful playdate!

And I did take some images, too....lest I forget I was working!

Believe it or not, its that time! Robichaud Photography's Fall Family Mini Sessions!

This year (and yes, mostly bc it was FREEZING last year...I was sick for a week!), we are having them here at the Studio. I have a lovely area behind my studio that I am using as a sort of Portrait Garden, and it has several cool spaces for portraits. And if you want to get really brave, we can climb down into the creek and use that area, too.

This is a unique location that is OFF LIMITS to non-tenants of the building. So, what does that mean? None of your friends and neighbors will have portraits like yours :) Well, if they dont use me, they wouldnt have cool portraits anyway but you know what I mean!!

When I met Baby B.'s parents @ their maternity session, I was VERY excited to learn that they are big horse people...I have always wanted to put a newborn on a saddle, but whats the point of just plunking a baby on a saddle with no background to it.

So Baby B. was just dreamy (as are his parents....*so* in love with each other) and allowed us almost unlimited "playing"....

So we set up the saddle (carefully, with much spotting) and gently placed B. upon it. He started fussing and I was about to say "Ok, never mind", when he gave a big sigh, peed on us and settled into the saddle. :)

I'm going to sound *so* old when I say this, but the first time i met Baby R's mommy, she was in High School! In fact, I did her Senior Portraits....OK, she isnt 40 but she is a mom now, so that makes me feel like Im 100. Or maybe thats just todays run making me feel old and creaky.

Baby R and Mommy and Daddy dont live here in Kansas City anymore, but I was lucky enough to get my hands on R. and A. when they came to visit family (yeah, yeah, in JUNE, I know I know). And I was so happy that I got the chance to see what a wonderful Mother A. is...patient and kind, relaxed and happy....what we should ALL aspire towards....

When Baby R.'s Mommy contacted me in May about her session, she said that she wanted "artsy" and "girly"...since baby girl was their first daughter :) I told her I could handle both!

R. was a dream to photograph (not that I dont love photographing the parents and siblings, I do!)...she slept deeply, liked hats (very important!) and was like putty in my hands!

Ok, I had to get that out....Miss M. knows what I am talking about...she is right now spitting Diet Coke out all over her keyboard bc she cant believe what a complete dork I am!! ;)

I have never photographed a Senior from Liberty High before...so Miss M. graciously agreed to represent Robichaud Photography at her school, which is so cool!

As is typical with *my* Seniors (I swear, I am NOT bragging, its TRUE)...Miss M. is gorgeous, brilliant, witty, charming and athletic. I am so lucky that I get the coolest Seniors at my Studio. We have such a good time and I can feel like I *might* still be cool....then I get back into my Mom van to go home and realize that no, my coolness is long gone, LOL

Baby T. doesnt like to be late...Baby T. doesnt like to be On Time either....Baby T. likes to be early....I think he just knew what an uber-cool family he had waiting for him....So why not come early and join in the family fun?

Mom told me that while she was hanging around @ St. Lukes Northland Hospital, she saw some fabulous newborn baby and child photography all over the labor and delivery unit. When she asked the nurses about them, they were so sweet to direct her my way :) (have I mentioned lately how much I LOVE St. Lukes Northland's staff??)

So even though Baby T. was a wee bit older than a few days...I was so glad they came to the Studio! Gorgeous family!! (and Mom *did* get a family portrait with her included, even though she said multiple times she hates being in pictures)...

The Littlest Hero {Kansas City Newborn Photographer}

I cant believe I havent blogged all summer...crazy busy! I have done more newborns than any other age this year....I could fill this blog with a different infant every day for weeks! And Im waiting on 6 more babes within the next several weeks!

This little cutie's Daddy started planning this photography session with my Studio when his wife was only a few week along! Ive been honored to be included in the pregnancy updates, did the maternity session right before I left on my vacation, and was ready to photograph Baby a week after his due date....um, which was Aug 28.

I left on my vacation on July 26, he was born a few days later...whoops, so much for all that planning!

So the one shot *I* had been planning since 8 months ago was this one...I just love Firefighters!!

And PS....this is another one of those shots that looks so simple, but its not...please dont think about plunking a newborn into a wobbly container of any sort....these shots are taken seriously in my studio. All precautions are taken and with 7+ years of experience even I still abandon them when I feel like they arent working....

Maternity Portraits are... {Kansas City Maternity Photographer Susan H. Robichaud}

...for everyone! Even other local photogs and their gorgeous wives! I *love* when I am asked by other professional photographers to photograph their families...its such an honor, you have no idea!

But its a tad nerve wracking when its a local KC Wedding Photographer who repeatedly takes home the PPA Golden Bellows award in Print Competition (um, he's AMAZING).

I tried not to be too nervous, but I admit my hands were a bit shaky that evening. And I did drag my feet a smidge getting them their images....I mean, what if they hated them??? They didnt, and they are both so kind and gracious that I really had nothing to worry about. But, I'm neurotic, we all know that!!

I wanted to share these and let Kansas City enjoy them as much as I do :)

Right before my winter break, I had a slew of newborns...this was the first of 3 in one week (and I have many more coming up!)and the only baby girl!

Another gorgeous little guy {Kansas City Newborn Photographer}

Gosh I love newborns....they are so sweet and soft..they smell so yummy! I am sure my clients sometimes wonder why I smell their babies, LOL I love the smell of their baby-ness...and every Mommy knows what I am talking about (Daddies think I'm weird I suspect).

This is the newest addition to one of my fave couples...they are so excited, its just contagious to be around them! And Baby E. was such a cooperative little one..I've had a string of totally sleepy bendy newborns....totally been able to play to my hearts content!

Thanks again for letting me knit for, photograph (and sniff) sweet Baby E.! I cant wait to see you all again soon!

I do a lot of family portraits (esp this time of year!)....but I have really seen an increase in the number of families choosing to have their portraits made in the Studio this year. I absolutely love it, because it gives thr family a chance to have something "different" than everybody else has. Most family portraits these days are done outdoors (and dont get me wrong, I love doing those, too).

But there is something to be said about having the perfect lighting ratios, LOL

So when you are ready to book YOUR family portrait, dont dismiss the idea of having your portraits made IN the Studio this year...be unique! (and be warm, its like 30 degrees out there!)...

Another Mystery Session {Kansas City Child Photographer}

This was one of the Mystery Sessions that I did over the summer....hard to believe but it was SO hot and sticky on this evening, the mosquitoes were eating us alive and I sent Mom on an errand 5 minutes before we started to go get balloons.

My friend Dena asked me last night when we were on the phone "Why havent you posted any new images on your Blog? I know you are busy as all get out"....and I thought about it. I have totally been neglecting my Blog in favor of Facebook and Twitter. Thats not good (although if you join me on Facebook and Twitter, its true, you will see a more active page than this Blog).

Anyway, yes, swamped here at the Studio, getting ready for the Halloween Bash, Christmas, just finished the Fall Family Mini Sessions.....and so many maternities lately....more in the past month than I did in the first half of the year!

Let's Go Chiefs! {Kansas City Child and Family Photographer}

Yesterday I finally met a celebrity....an honest to goodness NFL player....Kansas City Chief's Tight End, Sean Ryan.

Sean came out to the downtown library to kick off the Junior League of Kansas City, MO's Hooked on Books campaign. Sean is the new spokesperson from the Chiefs for the Hooked on Books collection.

The Hooked on Books campaign is starting its 12th year and runs Sept 29-Oct 31, 2009. The program gathers new or gently used books for KC-metro kids who might not otherwise have access to books at home. Over 800, 000 books have been collected and given to children by the program.

I was invited to this event by the Junior League of Kansas City, Mo, and was so inspired by the League members, Sean and the Chiefs and the kids who were present, that I have set up a drop-off for YOUR new or gently used books here at the Studio. I will collect the books through Oct 25 (can bring them to the Halloween Bash!) and deliver them to the Junior League after that date.

So, lets show the Chiefs that the Northland is behind them! Bring me your books!

An interview on the Today Show with a baby photographer talking about Newborn Portraits. She said EVERYTHING I have been saying here in Kansas City for over 5 years....to get those newborns into the Studio when they are brand new!

Ah, I love the end of summer.....why, you ask? Summer is so fun, lazy days next to the pool, Worlds of Fun, vacations and sleeping late....

Well, I love the end of summer because it brings me one of my fave things in the whole world: SENIORS!!! (no, not those AARP people...High School Seniors!!)

I love my Seniors, I seem to get the coolest, prettiest and most athletic....it must be b.c I'm the same way.....well, maybe not. Robichaud Photography, Kansas City's premier portrait studio is proud to announce the opening of a new division: Simply Real Portraits.

Over the past 5 years, I have worked hard to turn my love of photography into a successful boutique studio, serving the Kansas City metropolitan area. My fabulous clients are based here in the Northland, around the country and throughout the world. I have been honored to have my work been published in the Random House publication The Big Book of Babies, as well as decorate St. Lukes Northland Hospital's Maternity units, pediatric offices and 3D Ultrasound clinics. The New Kid on the Block [Kansas City Newborn and Family Photographer]

Another newborn session from weeks ago that I have neglected to blog about.....this little one is the 5th boy for the B. family and another probably already a great athlete like his brothers!

All Mom wanted was some of those "Anne Geddes" newborn shots that I am known for....and for 2 days, and 10+ hours we tried to get him to sleep for us...no dice. He didnt cry, just observed me, and his brothers, and his parents....we even tried plying him with Subway, but he didnt go for it.

So, we got great shots of him with his parents and his brothers and alone...and out of 45 images, I think his eyes are closed in like 3.....but he may have been blinking now that I think about it....

Welcome to the world Baby M! It *is* worth being awake for.....

This week's Mystery Location is All About Urban....but not my usual spots..no, this time will be in a KC landmark location, with lots of great opportunities for cool shots of your kids and/or family.

A morning or evening session will work this time.
Ages over 5 (busy area of town, close to streets, so no dashing toddlers please), or a family session would work best. No more than 2 kids if under 8. (like I said, it can be a busy area and I'm not risking lives for portraits).

Mystery Location Theater, Take 2 ...

Location Description: riverfront with view of downtown, in Kansas City.

Time of Day: morning session, 930-1030 start time.

Best for: Any age, but would be fun to have ages that could be trusted to be NEAR the river and not dive in. This is not required though... Families are good, too. No age limit.

Clothing suggested: clothing with contrast (black, navy, denim), that will realy POP againsy the KC skyline and river. No white, too pasty for this location. I will provide cool chairs, etc.

Location Description: old abandoned barn in the Northland. This is right near my house and I pass it everyday. I have always wanted to shoot around it but havent.

Mystery Location Sessions {Kansas City Child and Family Photographer}

I’ve been living here in the Northland for almost 8 years….been in the child photography business for 5 of those years. And yet there are still lots of places I haven’t used for any sessions…..or used maybe once many years ago. Why don’t I use them? I don’t know….some part of it is laziness; it’s easier to go where I know. Another part of it is dependability; its best to take your clients to places that you know will be comfortable and pleasant for their portrait experience.

But, I get these itches that I need to scratch…and I can’t afford my kids going rates for “modeling” for me..so, what’s a girl to do?

Oh yeah, give aways!

So, here’s the deal….each week or so, I will post a general description of the place I want to have a session….and the first person to respond (email is always faster to me, I have my “Crackberry” on all the time) with a “Why I want the session”, gets a complimentary session (a $500 value)! No prints are included, but a 10% discount on purchases, is.

The sessions will be held during the week, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday….usually morning, but some evenings (I will include the times in the description). It just depends on where the location is and what time of day I think would be best.

The sessions themselves will also be tagged with whether a baby/child/siblings or family can enter…some locations would be ideal for a family session, some would be better suited for 1-2 kids only. Just check out the descriptions carefully J

Another Gorgeous Newborn {Kansas City Newborn Photographer}

Last month (I know, I know, so far behind in everything!) one of my very first clients that I had when I opened my business 5 years ago gave birth to her second son...you should see her eyes light up when she talks about her boys...its like looking at the face of love itself. I aspire to be the gentle and patient woman she is with her sons (she claims that it is not always so, but I dont believe her).

Baby G, accompanied by Mommy and Big Brother K. held me awestruck by their bond for a couple of hours and after they left, I felt happy all day.....love does that to me...I'm a sap.

because these sisters are my friends daughters, and I love them, but how beautiful are they??

It is hard to photograph your friends kids, b/c they are used to seeing you in your driveway, in your jammies getting the paper, or chasing the runaway dog down the middle of the street. They dont really think of you any other way.

When I told them that I was a real professional photographer, published in a book, people fly in from around the world to have me photograph their families, they laughed at me.

Maybe I should have stayed in my jammies for their session? Think that would have helped?

How will Robichaud Photography be using the images of my child?

All Robichaud SuperHottie images will be used to market/promote the RobichaudSeniors website, Studio and SuperHottie program. Your child's images may appear on our web site, blog, Facebook, Twitter and in any online or printed marketing materials. Your Senior's images will not be sold, used in any unethical/illegal/immoral way, nor published in any books or magazines without prior authorization from you and your Senior.

What is required of my child to be a SuperHottie?

All Robichaud SuperHotties will receive the above-referenced goodies in exchange for the promotion of the Robichaud Photography Studio and SuperHottie program. This entails showing off his/her images and book, passing out SuperHottie "rep cards" with the Studio info on them, promoting the Studio on Facebook, Twitter and any other online social networking sites and basically just being a good representative of my Studio.

I want Seniors who are outgoing, active in the Schools and willing to talk up the Studio and their experience with me. There is no "requirement" for SuperHotties to get their friends to book with me....but I really want the Seniors to do their best to showcase my work with them so the other kids will consider booking a Senior Safari with the Studio.

In addition, all SuperHotties will be responsible for nominating the next year's SuperHotties, so they will need to be aware of the Juniors, who is a good candidate, that kind of thing.

That's it! I will be accepting applications through June 10, then we will do test shots in late June, and announce the 2010 SuperHotties by July 3, 2009.

All SuperHotties will need to do their Senior Portrait Safari before school starts in August (so you will have all your images, book and cards when school starts up again). So if you cant commit to that one, please dont apply.

SuperHotties can also have another free session right before graduation (you will likely have a different look, so lets just plan on doing both).

a Louis Vuitton bag for my birthday a couple of years ago...its one of those cute little bags that all my crap wont fit in, so I rarely carry it. Instead I buy knockoffs by the dozen..

The other day I was scrounging in my closet for a belt when I saw the LV bag on the shelf....I got it down and really LOOKED at it...and realized what I have been missing by not appreciating the true luxury of this handbag.

It smells expensive (b/c it is)...like real leather and suede (b/c its real leather and suede)
It has a gorgeous shape which is still perfect (b/c its well made)
It is a timeless style (who doesnt know real Louis?)
Its luxurious and elite (not an "everybody can afford" item...its special)

So while I was thinking about how I could transfer my 10 lbs of junk in my current bag into this one, I was also thinking about how my Studio is like that bag (no, not small and you cant fit into it, but if I dont start hitting the gym, that might become the case)...

A Robichaud Photography experience is a luxury....its something (I hope) that you invest in because its special...its a designer label, not a knock off. We are real leather and suede and silk and good wine. We are fun and we are laughter, we are bonds of friendship and we are almost-family.

I look around at Kansas City and its numerous photographers, and for sure there are clients for everyone....but I hope that when you are ready for YOUR "Louis" in Portraiture, you choose based on wanting luxury and not just what everyone can afford.

I had the pleasure of photographing Baby O's big sis when she was a newborn (and beyond), and I know she's Daddy's girl, but when Dad is part of a major league franchise like the Royals and his 2nd baby is a boy...we bring out the bats, baby!

So he wasnt totally happy, but its amazing, a baby can honestly sleep anywhere...and dont try this one at home, folks, Mom, Dad and I had it quite set-up so no danger was there at all!

I have this amazing woman who has been my friend for several years...she is one of those people that never has anything negative to say about anyone, and always leaves you feeling refreshed by her presence...

So a couple of years ago she (ok at my bullying) started her own business. I have her site linked off my blog and she was featured in my newsletter once, too. I think she is FABULOUS all around, so I begged her to do a commission for my new Studio....she was gracious enough to squeeze me into her busy schedule, and I absolutely LOVE what she did for me...

On Being Authentic {Kansas City Child Photographer}

I get lots of "inspiration" emails about business, marketing and life in general. Sometimes I dont read them, but I like the ones I get from Jeffrey Gitomer (he's a sales guru and makes a lot of sense for my business). So today he has an article from another guy, a motivational speaker named Mike Robbins....it is called Be Yourself, Everybody Else is Already Taken...catchy title, so I read it.

I'm going to post it here so everyone can read it...I think its a very powerful message...especially in my industry. I know that I am often criticized within my industry for being too "real" on my blog and in my day to day dealings with clients and other photographers. People think I should be less personal, more aloof, not let the world see my vulnerabilities, not admit "weakness", always appear "business-like" and tough. I always respond that I'm NOT always tough, things DO bug me, and I dont MIND my clients knowing what I think/feel/do in my personal life....I share my family, my rambling thoughts and my big hair from high school pictures....

I always thought maybe I was wrong....now I am postive I am just ME...and totally AUTHENTIC.

How often do you not say or do something because you’re worried about how it’ll be perceived? For most of us, myself included, this happens more often then we’d like to admit.

Tell the whole truth (even when we don’t want to or we mess something up)
Be vulnerable and real
Admit, own, and share our true thoughts, feelings, desires, insecurities, passions, and more.

However, being open and real about all of these things (and more) is what it means to be authentic. Authenticity is what has people trust us, want to do business with us, and count on us personally.

Five Principles for Being Your Authentic Self

In order to utilize the power of authenticity in your life and your work as a way to enhance your relationships, increase your success, and empower yourself, here are five key principles:

1) Know Yourself – Make a commitment to your own personal growth. Discover more of who you are. And, seek out and allow the support, honest feedback, and coaching of others.

2) Transform Your Fear – There’s nothing wrong with having fear, it’s the resistance and denial of fear that is the real problem. When you admit, own, feel, and express your fear, you have the ability to move through it, transform it, and utilize its power in a positive way. Taking action in the face of fear is courageous and empowering.

I wish more parents would be in the session...I"m going to start demanding it, ROFL

My Husband Works All Day...{Kansas City Child Photographer}

I hear that a lot, when I'm getting people scheduled for their sessions....so I schedule without Dad. Or we do an evening or a weekend, where possible. Usually I can get Daddy in for the newborn session because he takes a few days off after Baby arrives....that's always fun.

But when I was scheduling someone this morning for a session, and she said "Oh, my husband cant come, he works all day", I really for some reason started obsessing on that issue....and it sort of ties in with where all of our heads are these days...the economy.

How do these 2 issues tie together? I'll tell you (like you would be able to stop me, right?)

You have a child, and for the most part, Mom stays home (or stays home part-time) with the kids. Dad works all day....comes home, tired, but happy to spend a couple of hours with his family before baths, books and bedtimes roll around. So Dad doesn't really see the kids as much as Mom does...so he isn't the first one to get that first smile, see that first step or enjoy that first lost tooth grin. And those moments, as we all know, disappear in a heartbeat....never to come again.

So how does Dad get to experience his kids day-to-day milestones? In photographs, of course. Mostly snapshots....I have my share of blurry snaps where my shutter lag was so bad that my kid moved on before the flash fired...leaving me with an out of focus wobbly head leaving the frame. But why do we settle for only those....why do we not want more for our family?

Maybe some do, but think they cant afford it, in "this" economy.

Lets think about it though....what is so important in your life that you would do anything for it?

Your family, right?

Do you look at your child's baby pictures and smile? I do....and believe me, I'm happy I have anything, because honestly, 2 kids later, I don't really remember how small the boys were in that first few weeks....I try to remember, but I don't. In fact, its difficult for me to tell who is who in the little blurry snaps from those days. I truly wish I had professional newborn photographs of my boys (and my pregnancies). I don't. I didn't take them, and I didn't hire someone to do it. Now its too late for me.

Do you have photographs of that first smile? Your baby sitting up (wow, remember how COOL that was...no more lying on the floor all day watching the baby stare at the ceiling fan)? Your baby's first birthday? His second, fifth? How about his tenth?

Probably some...but are they the kind that capture the essence of your child at that time in his life? Or, like me, do you struggle to remember.

So since Dad works all day, and is missing his kids like mad (mine calls to talk to the boys after school, pumps them for info at the dinner table, and loves when I send him any images I capture of them)...why not invest in something better for him (and for yourself).

(Even better....get Dad to come for a session with the family...it will mean so much to everyone).

"But we should be saving our money" "We need to cut back on our spending" "We are in a terrible recession"

True, but in times of economic crisis, we turn inward, to our families, to our memories...we should make every effort to preserve those family memories, even MORE in times like these...

Because its more important than money, folks. Its about Time...Time Lost or Time Stopped....its your choice.

That cart full of useless junk from Target costs $250...is that what is more important that stopping the cold march of time? I don't think you really think that. I know I don't.

Its been Newborn-palooza at the Studio for the last few months! But I, of course, LOVE it!

Baby A. is the newest sister of one of my fave families. Her big sis was chosen to be in the Big Book of Babies that I was published in last year....in fact, the publisher told me that image was her favorite of the whole book. :)

Perhaps the next time I am asked to contribute to a major publication, I can submit Baby A...she certainly has the "look"...gorgeous as the rest of her family!

When the kids pounced on us this morning shrieking that it was "finally" snowing, my first thought was sledding....my second thought was "man, that vintage couch and a snow bank"....so I enlisted my youngest to help me out...he was, um, less than thrilled.

But luckily an hour of letting him cling to my back while I raced down a snowy hill on a piece of plastic on my belly made up for it (yeah, like THOSE shots will ever see the light of day....)

R. and I met a couple of years ago when our kids played on the same soccer team (and her hubby coached...he was awesome at that, too)...our kids are good friends and I just love her family.

After I did her 2 kids portraits last year, R. and T. got a surprise: Baby #3! We dont know the gender, so I am anxiously waiting for the birth so that I can start knitting in the correct color. In the meantime, she was gracious enough to allow me to photograph her maternity session, at 37 weeks, while having contractions...what a trooper!

Back to checking my voice mail.....is Baby here yet??

We're in a Recession? Hmmm....

OK, I admit it, I dont really buy into the belief that we are in a full-on depression...I might teeter on the belief of a recession...but everywhere *I* go, people seem to be doing pretty well and look pretty happy! That makes ME happy. :)

But, according to NPR and the news (hey, even FOX news), the ecomomy is in "correction" mode...and when that happens, people cut back. And I know that when *I* am trying to cut back a bit, some of my luxury items are shelved. Not so many lattes and fewer trips to the mall, matinee (instead of evening) movies and less dining out.

So it occured to me that my Studio can help with this. There is no need to cut back on the luxury of beautiful portraiture of your family...no need to sacrifice quality and experience for, well, less. Just because the Market is down, doesnt mean your expectations have to be.

So, starting today, February 23, 2009, I have banished the A la carte pricing menu from my Studio. I've just put it away. All sessions will be priced off the Portrait Collections Menu, regardless of whether a Collection is purchased. This is a significant savings for you, my valued clients!

In addition, during the month of March, any regular session (signature sessions, fundraisers and Short and Sweets do not count) will receive a complimentary 5x5 leather art book. The session MUST be during the month of March and is subject to my availability.

So, this is my Gift to you, Kansas City, and with it goes my wish for our Country to heal quickly and we can all get back to Starbucks and Nordstrom. ;)

The Mom Time Out List

So today both my kids are home from school. We've had a trying day (as in they are trying to make me have a nervous breakdown and I am trying not to grab the stash of Bailey's left over from Christmas).

We got home a little while ago and I decided Mom needed a Time Out. I locked myself in my office and I am refusing to come out. One brave soul knocked on the door and was treated to the following list of Allowed Reasons for Interrupting Mom's Time Out....I thought I would share, so everyone can have them:

You may interrupt Mom's Time Out, IF:

1. Emminent fire will destroy the house. Well, actually, this doesnt necessitate knocking on my door...push the fire alarm button on the security system and run outside. I should be along shortly....dont forget to take the dog with you.

2. Grizzly Bear Attack. Try plying him with some cookies from the pantry first though, I mean, you are 5 and 7, show some initiative here!

3. Rattlesnake Bite. After you have really worked on sucking out the poisen, and called 911, you may knock. Seriously, I read that in a book, it should work.

4. Unconciousness. If its someone other than me. If its me, just leave me be.

5. Being Abducted by Aliens. Once you have verified that they have no intention of actually returning you...if they are planning on bringing you back, have fun and see you soon. Take some pictures for me.

6. Bones Sticking Out of Skin at Weird Angles. This might require my assistance, better knock. Same with any blood spurting higher than the armoire in the living room. That usually signals an artery has been pierced....grab some towels, too.

7. Flooding. And by flooding I mean natural flooding OR kid-made flooding. I'm not having those floors restored again. And if its kid-made, you should probably hide.

8. Group of People at Front Door with Camera Crew and Oversized Cardboard Check with My Name on It. This is very important and signals that we will be having pizza for dinner tonight, and likely every night for the 3 weeks that I will now be away on a cruise. By myself.

9. Daddy's Home. Thank God, I"m out of here.

What a charmer...he had me singing to him and dancing with him in a matter of minutes...I'm sure Mom was wondering if I was going to ever give him back! (I admit, I wanted to keep him...but the drool....the trail would have given our location away in a heartbeat!)

We all know I am a coffee hound...Starbucks especially, although I like most of the coffee houses here in the Northland...they all offer something different, which is nice.

New Studio, Grand Opening BASH!!

Holy Moly Macaroni as my kids would say....where they got that I dont know, but its better than the alternatives I suppose.

The NEW STUDIO IS (almost) COMPLETE!! Ok, so I have some wallpaper left to hang and my landlord needs to put up the rest of one wall, but why should that stop the PARTY??!!

The details for the Signature Sessions:

1. They are mini sessions, meant to "fill in" during the year between yor full sessions with me! They are 20 minutes in legth, maximum. Sometimes I get the images I need in less time, but I dont run over 20 minutes to be fair to everyone.

2. Unless it is an advertised family Signature Session, please only plan on having your children photographed. I have planned for different sessions throughout the year, so rest assured, there will be ample opportunities for portraits with your children.

3. You must reserve a time slot and have your Signature Session fee paid within 5 days of booking, or your slot will be released to another client. If you do not show up for your time slot, your fee will be applied to another Signature Session of your choosing (must be used within one year or reverts to Robichaud Photography as payment for time).

4. Unless otherwise specified, all Signature Sessions will be held at our studio location: 1839 NW Vivion Road in Riverside, MO. A Beautiful Boy

This little guy is a twin, and has an older brother, but I decided to just post this one...he hasnt had an easy first year of life, so I am hopeful that the road gets smoother.
